Ross and Lorne McDougall

Over the last 60 years, McDougall has successfully grown to include over 100 employees and 13 branch offices in Ontario, in order to allow more people to enjoy the benefits of what we offer. It all began in 1934…

  • 1934: Haig Brothers decided to expand, hiring Lorne McDougall to reorganize their office, and Arthur Bateman to focus on their farm insurance
  • 1941: Agency renamed Haig, McDougall and Bateman
  • 1946: Lorne McDougall purchased interests of his two partners, and renamed the business Lorne McDougall Insurance Brokers' Ltd.; office employed four staff
  • 1948: Moved to new office space at 150 Front Street, Belleville; employed 14 staff
  • 1969: Entered the life insurance field and contracted with Empire Life of Kingston. Now one of Belleville's largest investment and financial product agencies
  • 1972: Lorne McDougall steps down as president; Stuart McDougall begins as president
  • 1976: Major changes; president Stuart McDougall died in a boating accident
  • 1977: Officers were Ross McDougall, president; George Ward, VP; Ken Wheeler, secretary-treasurer. Opened new space in Century Place, one of the first insurance agencies in a small town to make the move from storefront to actual office space; 25 staff
  • 1980s: Aggressive growth pattern started, commencing with the purchase of Burrows & Morgan in 1981; purchased several firms from Brighton and Cobourg to Picton and Madoc
  • 2000: Opened Clarington office
  • 2001: Purchased DC Johnson Insurance Brokers, four offices: Eganville, Arnprior, Carleton Place, and Barry's Bay
  • 2002: Purchased Appleton Insurance, Oshawa
  • 2004: Amalgamated with Kingfisher Financial Services
  • 2006: Celebrated 60th Anniversary
