Top Selling Trucks and SUV’s
In Canada, there is one thing you can count on, we love our trucks – we love them big, burly and fully loaded. There is just something about a truck that screams king of the road. On the other end of the showroom floor, coming in a close second is the ever more popular sport utility vehicles (SUV’s), particularly the more sporty models.
Pickup sales are up more than 10% compared to this time on 2014 and sales of crossover SUV’s are up nearly 15%. The competition is getting fierce, and that means plenty of extras for the buyer. An impressive array of new models are rolling out for the new 2016 season keeping demand high for both the pickup and the SUV segments of the market.

If you are concerned about insurance rates, you should compare quotes. There are many factors that go into calculating auto insurance such as where you live, your driving record and insurance record. The vehicle itself also plays a big role in determining the amount of insurance you will pay. All vehicles are rated based on; the average cost of the vehicle, how safe it is, and the average cost to repair it. The higher the rating, the more premium you are likely to pay for your auto insurance. Another factor is theft – which is why the Ford F-150 gets hit the hardest when it comes to insurance rates. It may remain the top selling truck, but it is also the most stolen vehicle in Canada, typically making it more expensive to insure.
Most of these trucks will help you get the job done, but which ones will force you to pay more for insurance? Not likely the Nissan Frontier, which consistently came out on top as the cheapest truck to insure. Coming in a close second is the Honda Ridgeline followed by the Nissan Titan.

SUV’s now account for more than 25% of the sales in the Canadian auto market. These vehicles are family friendly offering a combination of added utility and interior cargo room over comparable sized cars. The biggest considerations when buying an SUV are seating capacity, fuel-efficiency, reliability, safety features and kid focused extras. The top sellers are listed here:
- Ford Escape
- Honda CR-V
- Toyota RAV4
- Nissan Rogue
- Hyundai Sante Fe Sport
- Dodge Journey
- Jeep Wrangler
- Jeep Cherokee
- Mazda CX-5
- Chevrolet Equinox
When buying a car the biggest consideration which is often overlooked is the auto insurance. This can be a costly mistake. When making your vehicle purchase decision, you should compare quotes and find out how much it will differ from vehicle to vehicle, before you make your final choice.
In Canada, the Hyundai Sante Fe Sport comes out on top as the least expensive to insure followed by the Dodge Journey and the Jeep Wrangler.
If money is no object in your purchase decision, you may consider the fully loaded Tesla Model X.
Every buyer is different, and there are many factors to consider when determining your choice of vehicle. If you are in the market to buy one of Canada’s top selling vehicles, shop around for insurance rates. It only takes a few minutes and it could save you hundreds of dollars!
