Meet The Dougallers: Leon Howe

Leon is one of the newer faces at McDougall Insurance in Belleville, but he’s no stranger to working with people. After years in the finance world, Leon was ready for a new challenge and insurance seemed like the perfect fit. But we didn’t just want to talk about insurance. There is so much more to Leon than meets the eye. So, we asked him some questions to learn a bit more about his life, both in and out of the office.

Where were you born and raised?

I was born and raised right here in Belleville. It’s home, and I love being part of this community.

What do you like to do in your free time?

When I’ve got some downtime, I’m usually golfing, heading to a sporting event or planning my next trip. I like staying active and making the most of my time off.

What kind of music do you listen to?

My music taste is all over the place. I’ve been listening to Bankin’ on Me by Gunna, This Town by Niall Horan, and New Orleans is Sinking by The Tragically Hip. Depends on the mood.

What’s your go-to meal, and what makes it special?

You really can’t go wrong with a chicken Caesar wrap—it’s just a solid choice. But if I’m craving something warm and filling, I’ll go with butter chicken or chicken tikka masala. Always hits the spot.

Is there a quote or phrase you live by?

“Don’t believe everything you read on the internet.” A little sarcasm, a little truth.

What’s your favourite movie?

Step Brothers is one I can watch over and over—Will Ferrell is hilarious. I’m also a big fan of the Harry Potter movies. I grew up watching them and they still hold up. You are a wizard Harry… 

Tell us something fun or unique about you.

I’ve got quite a few tattoos, I’m really into sneakers, and I have a soft spot for rom-coms. Yeah, you read that right.

How did you get into insurance?

I worked in finance for a long time. I learned a lot, but eventually I was ready for a new challenge. Insurance was something I’d thought about for years, but the timing was never right—until a friend of mine who works at McDougall (shoutout to Erin!) encouraged me to go for it. The rest is history.

What do you bring to the table to help your clients?

I’d say communication is my biggest strength. I enjoy building relationships, I’m easy to reach and I make sure people feel taken care of—no matter what their needs are.

What builds trust with your clients?

It’s about communication, honesty, and showing up. Doing your job and being consistent builds long-term trust, and that’s what I aim for every day.

Who’s your favourite sports team?

As you can tell from my office, of course it’s the STEELERS…The first football game I ever remember watching was Steelers vs. Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII. Watching James Harrison’s 100-yard interception sealed the deal for me. Been a fan ever since.

Who inspires you—on or off the field?

Kobe Bryant. His work ethic and the way he approached every part of his life—basketball, family, business—it’s all really inspiring.
