Contractors Liability Insurance
Contractors require a commercial general liability insurance policy for their business. As a contractor, there are risks associated with your business and the work itself. The most important coverage to protect you and your business is commercial general liability insurance. This coverage protects your business in the event you cause property damage to a third party, or bodily injuries. For instance if you cause damage to a clients home while working on it you would need a commercial general liability policy. On the bodily injury side if you have tools or lumber lying around on a job site and someone slips and falls and injuries themselves you would need liability coverage.
Your business could also be involved in a lawsuit. A commercial general liability policy will cover legal fees, medical expense and any damages up to your policy limits. At McDougall Insurance we recommend carrying a minimum of $2,000,000 liability. An important note is your liability coverage applies to all employees of your business, not each individual employee, which is why carrying a higher limit is essential. If you are hiring sub-contractors it is important that they carry their own liability insurance. This insures all parties have adequate coverage.

A contractors tools and equipment are a very important part of their business. Adding tools and equipment coverage to your contractors insurance policy provides protection or replacement to those tools if they are stolen, or damaged by an insured peril. There is a distinct difference between what is considered a tool and what is considered equipment. Generally tools are items valued less than $2500. Items like drills, hammers, wrenches would all be considered tools. Items over $2500 are considered equipment, this would include table saws, compressors, excavators, scaffolding.
Installation Floater
An installation floater may not be required for every situation. However, contractors, plumbers, electricians or HVAC companies may require this coverage as it protects any property you own or are responsible for while in transit or at a job site. For instance if you are installing new windows and they are stored at a job site and are stolen, you would require an installation floater. Ask about the Gold package if you have materials or tools and equipment in transit frequently, as we have higher limits available.
Get a QuoteCommercial Auto Insurance for Contractors
One element many contractors miss out on is acquiring a commercial auto insurance policy. Your vehicle is being used for business purposes. Whether it is carrying tools, hauling trailers, or transporting materials. Ensuring you have a commercial auto insurance policy provides the proper protection for you if something happens to your vehicle or tools or materials while in the vehicle. If you are a contractor and own a vehicle that is not insured commercially but you still use it for work you may face issues if a claim occurs. It is your responsibility to disclose if your vehicle is used for work. If you are hauling trailers as part of your business, it is also essential to have those trailers listed on your insurance policy. At the end of the day, if you have a commercial general liability policy for your business, you likely also need a commercial auto insurance policy for your vehicles.

What Our Customers Are Saying
Val Huckstep
My experience with McDougall Insurance has been amazing right from the start! I got in contact with Jon Borello a few months ago, and have been overly pleased with his service! As this is my first time on insurance, Jon has made the experience super easy for me, and completely stress free! I’ve been more than pleased with the prices he’s worked out for me and the over all service he provides. I couldn’t be happier with the decision I made to go with McDougall, and I don’t ever plan on changing companies!!
Cathy Pitts
We have been with McDougall for over 15 years. They are an exceptional office with great people. Quick to respond – we were hit with a tornado in 2006 – and were excellent to deal with.
Melanie Chatman
I’ve only been with mcdougall insurance for 6 months. The team has been amazing. Always there to answer any questions I may have. I have a classic car and my rates for car and house are cheaper than my old rate for just my car at my previous insurance company. Thanks Mike!
Todd Carrol
