Cottage on a piece of land by the water

5 Fun Things to do at Your Cottage

You know why you spend money on cottage insurance? Because you want to enjoy what you’ve worked hard to get! Insurance preserves your peace of mind, knowing that you will be able to enjoy the things you love for the foreseeable future. But what if you have no peace to begin with? What if you spend all your time stressing about your cottage insurance in the thousand islands, or Muskoka? Well we have a few ideas to help.

Unplug

Have you ever had your cellular phone more than a mile away from you in the past three years? A scary number of people would answer no to that question. Although we can’t always just drop our worklife, you have your cottage there precisely to help you forget about work for a while.

Keeping your phone with you inhibits your mind’s ability to separate from “work mode”, which will increase your stress, reduce the quality of your sleep and counteract everything a cottage is supposed to do! So turn off that phone, and go enjoy the peaceful relaxation you’ve earned! Don’t think about cottage insurance, or your presentation next Tuesday, or your bills. There will be time enough for that later.

Read a Book

When was the last time you were able to sit down and just read? Probably not recently enough. Reading for entertainment is an excellent activity – but it also offers a host of benefits including improved analytical reasoning, broader vocabulary and less stress.

The cottage is a perfect place to read, as you can be free of mundane distractions and able to enjoy a comfy, well-lit environment. You can even read outside, which is a phenomenally relaxing experience. Fiction, non-fiction, whatever. Pick one up, and sit yourself down! You’ll be glad you did.

Play a Board Game

Board Games are great fun, for the whole family. Who doesn’t like getting together to play monopoly or clue? It is an excuse for socialization and face to face contact – things that are becoming increasing scare in today’s electronic society (see suggestion #1 – unplug).

Children love to play, but you’ll be surprised at just how well games can be enjoyed by the whole family. From Trivial Pursuit to more adult games like Balderdash and Scattergories, board games exercise the mind and develop a bond between players that you’ll be able to enjoy for the result of your life.

Go for a Walk

What is nicer then stretching your legs and enjoying the world like mother nature intended? If you answered “Nothing”, then walking is for you! You’ll be surprised how liberating and refreshing it is to just go for a wander without any real goals or plans, just for the sake of walking. It’s great exercise, and can clear your head better then anything else you can do at the cottage!

Now don’t go walking randomly into brush without thinking – that would be a historically bad idea. Tell someone that you are going for a walk, or even better, bring a buddy along! If someone know when you are supposed to be back, they can take action if something bad happens. And if there is anything we’ve seen in doing cottage insurance, and insurance in general, it is that even the most innocent things can sometimes turn deadly – and expensive.

Morning Boat Ride

Every self-respecting cottager should hit the water at sunrise at least once in their lifetime. Have you ever heard about how rowers get up at four in the morning to practice their craft on the water? They do it because of the incredible calm of early morning waters.

There is no disturbance of the surface, and no boats casting wake, which makes the water look like glass. It is absolutely gorgeous to behold, and when you combine it with sunrise, it is practically poetic.

Yeah getting up early isn’t exactly fun, but it’s worth it – especially if you go to bed early the night before, after… I don’t know… a relaxing day of reading. Try it, and I guarantee cottage insurance, or the other worries of your work world, will simply melt away. At least for a few moments, and that is really what having a cottage is all about.
