Ontario drivers pay the highest insurance premiums in the country. Intact insurance, Canada’s largest insurance provider, has launched a program that just may help you see a large savings on your car insurance bill.
It’s called telematics and it is reshaping the auto-insurance industry. Thousands of customers have signed up already and are saving on their car insurance. We originally shared this story with you in July 2014, and since then, Intact has sweetened the pot. Instead of 5%, now you will receive a 10% discount just for signing up! Guaranteed. So how does it work?
It’s simple. A small electronic device plugs into the onboard diagnostic port of the vehicle. This device transmits information on your driving habits. The transmitter usually includes a GPS, an accelerometer and a gyroscope to determine position, mileage and speed. This black box of sorts will record the time of day that the vehicle is driven, sudden acceleration or sudden braking. Sure, everyone needs to brake quickly once in awhile, but repeated hard braking tells another story. Also, day time driving is, in general, safer than driving between the hours of 1 and 4 am.
In general, insurance companies offer discounts based on age, gender and various statistics related to actuarial science. This usage-based program offers rewards for your good driving habits. It’s about time!
This new approach is likely to attract those who are confident they are safe drivers – or those willing to be aware of and improve on good driving habits. Those safer driving habits mean rewards – lower insurance premiums! The discounts start at 10% and can be as high as 25%. There is a real chance here for young drivers, who typically pay the highest premiums of all, to save on their insurance.
Connected car technologies reporting on driver behavior have been in use for many years now in fleets and companies running many vehicles with great success, and their accident rates have come way down. When the driver is aware that their driving behaviour is being recorded, they change it for the better. After awhile, good driving behaviour simply becomes the habit. Safer roads, sensible driving, and lower insurance rates. Everyone wins!
So, what are you waiting for? Go ahead, tell your friends, and they’ll tell their friends, and so on, and so on…there is $200 million dollars in refunds waiting for Ontario drivers – that includes YOU! Start saving today.
