Joyce Stewart: Real People Working For You Since 1978

Joyce Stewart began her career with McDougall Insurance straight out of college. What started as her first job grew into an amazing 48+ year career! Over the decades, Joyce has witnessed tremendous change – not only within the insurance industry but also in technology and the growth of McDougall Insurance itself. From the early days of manual typewriters and carbon paper copies to today’s digital systems and cloud-based platforms, she’s seen it all. Back then, client information lived in a Rolodex, and memos were typed by hand and produced without the help of spellcheck or software!

Joyce reflects, “I have seen so many changes over the 48 years. We’ve grown from one small office in Belleville, Ontario with just a handful of people, to numerous offices across Ontario, Alberta, and Nova Scotia.” When Joyce started she worked directly with our now CEO, Ross McDougall as an account manager.

Back in those days there was no such thing as a broker management system or the ability to store information on computers. Everything was documented on paper files, or as Ross and Joyce joke, carved into stone. Technology has certainly progressed in leaps and bounds, and the insurance industry is constantly evolving. Joyce too, has evolved with McDougall Insurance. Since joining the McDougall team in 1978, Joyce has been a legendary teammate – dedicated, dependable, and deeply respected by her team and clients.

Joyce has always felt like family at McDougall Insurance, “over the years, I’ve had opportunities to change career paths, but I never felt the desire to go elsewhere. I’ve always felt a strong sense of loyalty to McDougall Insurance. I truly enjoy the people I work with every day, as well as the Commercial clients I support. Many of them have been with us for years, and I’ve developed great relationships with them.” Even as one of the biggest brokers in Canada, it is clear that the small town, real person connection that we have with our clients is what makes the difference. Joyce is a team member who has worked with clients directly for over 40 years, that is rare in the world we live today.

When Joyce is not at work, one of her favourite hobbies is exercise and specifically running. She has competed in many running events throughout her life, including the County Marathon Relay where she competed with her fellow McDougall colleagues. See the image below.
