Comprehensive Auto Insurance in Ottawa with McDougall Insurance

Here at McDougall Insurance, we get you the best car insurance in Ottawa at an affordable rate. In Ontario, auto insurance is mandatory, but that doesn’t mean you’ll have to break the bank just to buy insurance. We get you cheap car insurance in Ottawa that doesn’t skimp on comprehensive coverage. To begin, all you’ll need is an active Ontario driver’s license, a car, and a free quote – which you can get right here, online, with our experts.

Mandatory Ottawa Car Insurance Coverage

The government of Ontario requires that individuals in Ottawa must carry the following coverage to operate their vehicles on public roadways:

  • Liability for Property Damage
  • Liability for Bodily Injury
  • Accident Benefits
  • Uninsured Motorists
  • Direct Compensation

A $1,000,000 coverage limit for liability is common in Ontario. Liability Coverage, by definition, is designed to protect Ottawa drivers from damages they do to others or others’ property in a car accident. Here at McDougall, we recommend upping your Liability Coverage to $2,000,000, as lawsuit costs are rising everyday and doubling your liability coverage costs you very little.

See how cheap your Ottawa car insurance can be with McDougall and our access to competitive markets.

Collision Coverage

Collision coverage is optional, but highly recommended as if you are ever in an accident and deemed to be at fault, collision coverage will cover you for damages done to your own vehicle. This includes instances such as hit & runs, or parking lot accidents. You’ll have to pay a deductible for your collision coverage, so if you submit a claim under this coverage then you’ll have to pay that amount before your insurance company steps in to pay the rest. A standard deductible is $500, but you can increase or decrease this amount with any standard insurance company.

Comprehensive Coverage

Comprehensive coverage, like collision coverage, is optional, but a good option to add for an additional premium to have coverage against fire, theft, vandalism, falling objects, and collisions with animals. It is subject to a deductible, meaning you’ll have to pay this amount before your coverage kicks in to cover the remainder. It may also include glass repairs.

Accident Benefits

As a rule, the government offers basic medical benefits for every driver in order to protect them in the event that an injury should occur. You may, however, purchase additional coverage as well, which is highly recommended for certain workers and those who have additional needs for their family. Sometimes, the standard offerings will not be enough to cover rehabilitation, medical expenses, and more, leaving you high and dry.

No-Fault Car Insurance in Ottawa

Ontario uses a system called no-fault car insurance, which means that your own insurance company will pay out for damages to your car – no matter who was at fault in the incident. A portion of your premium goes towards this protection. No-fault insurance significantly aids in the claims process so that each insurance company only handles their own insured’s claim.

Everyone needs insurance, but the standard car insurance policy in Ottawa may not benefit every single driver. In fact, the way that some people use their cars, how often they drive, and the value of their vehicles may merit the purchasing of additional, supplementary endorsements for an additional premium. See our list of available endorsements. If you see one that may of benefit to your circumstances, give us a call at McDougall to discuss.

Loss of Use Endorsement

Loss of Use, or OEF 20, offers you coverage that allows you to rent a car in the time that yours is out for repairs. This coverage is inexpensive to buy and is extremely helpful if you ever get into a claim situation where you require to purchase a rental vehicle. Without having this coverage, you’ll be responsible for finding your own alternative means of transport.

Limited Waiver of Depreciation Endorsement

This endorsement, known as OPCF 43, waives depreciation on newer vehicles and can be applied for 24 to up to 48 months. If your new car is in an accident in a year or two after purchase, you may replace it with a new vehicle of the same value or receive the value of your vehicle at purchase time and not its depreciated value. This helps to maximize the value you may receive in a claim payout situation for brand-new vehicles.

Liability for Damage to Non-Owned Vehicles

If you travel a lot, and you rent vehicles while traveling, you probably already know how expensive the coverage is for rental vehicles when purchased from the rental company. It can save you significantly on the rental company insurance rates and the coverage is good anywhere in the United States and Canada.

Claims Forgiveness Protection Endorsement

If you have a good driving record, you’ll want this endorsement. This endorsement preserves your driving record and maintain your existing driver rating after your first at-fault accident, waiving the premium increase.

Ottawa Auto Insurance FAQ’s

With your permission, anyone may borrow your vehicle (so long as their license is valid.) Your insurance policy, however, will follow your vehicle and not you, so if someone gets into an accident with your car, your insurance policy will be affected. The claim will be filed under your policy and show on your driver history.

A driver must be listed on your policy when they have graduated to a G2 license. You are not required to list a G1 licensed driver on your policy. The driver must be listed on your policy if they live in the same household as you and do not have an auto insurance policy of their own. You may also choose to add a driver who does not live with you but borrows your vehicle regularly.

You may certainly reduce or remove coverage off a vehicle that is not being driven. However, if you plan on driving the vehicle you will be legally required to purchase liability insurance to ensure your vehicle is road legal. It’s also not a bad idea to carry comprehensive insurance even while your vehicle is taken off the road. Comprehensive coverage provides protection from theft, fire, wind, vandalism, and more. Some drivers who have solely summer vehicles choose to do this.

Auto insurance in Ottawa is mandatory. In order to renew a registration or register a vehicle in the province, you must first provide evidence of insurance. If you are ever caught operating a vehicle without insurance, your license will be suspended, you may be fined and you will be considered high risk by insurance companies.
